A 53-year-old female presented with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis. Additional conditions and symptoms included Raynaud syndrome, fatigue, irritable bowel syndrome associated constipation (IBS-C), gastroesophageal reflux (GERD), menopausal symptoms, chronic urinary tract and upper respiratory infections, and weight gain. She was taking Arthrotec (a combination of diclofenac and misoprostol – for pain and inflammation), Fosamax Plus D (alendronate with vitamin D3 – recently prescribed because of low bone density)… Läs hela artikeln →
Autoimmune diseases (ADs) are chronic, often debilitating and potentially life-threatening conditions that collectively affect up to 23.5 million Americans, and their incidence is rising.(1) They are heterogeneous in pathology but share common tiopathogenic factors such as intestinal hyperpermeability.(2) Although up to 100 ADs have been identified, there are likely more.(1) Genetics plays a clear role in the predisposition for the development and phenotype of AD, but various combinations of factors, such as toxins, endogenous hormone imbalances, microbes (including of GI origin)… Läs hela artikeln →
Findings and Assessment at Initial Visit
History of Present Illness
LC, 12 years old, presented with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dysgraphia, environmental allergies, asthma, insomnia, eczema, canker sores, migraine headaches, muscle cramps, stomach pain, nausea and diarrhea. He was first diagnosed with ADHD at age 5. He repeated kindergarten because of attention and behavioral difficulties. He began methylphenidate (Ritalin®) in first grade and continued to take it through fourth grade, although it did not change his behavior significantly.
The drug was discontinued in fourth grade due to growth retardation. Off the medication, he gained weight but also increased his intake of junk food and deli meats…Läs hela artikeln →
Medical diagnosis has a storied and embarrassing past. The taxonomy of disease morphed as we moved from symptoms to anatomy to molecular biology to genomics and metabolomics.
A penchant for naming is intrinsic to the human mind. Hippocrates categorized disease into the 4 humors: black bile, yellow bile, phlegm, and blood… Läs hela artikeln →
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a condition of great morbidity for which few safe and effective approaches are available. It is an autoimmune disorder characterized by chronic inflammation of the synovial membranes. Although the exact etiology is unknown, some studies suggest that an antigenic response to food-derived proteins can trigger RA in genetically predisposed individuals. In addition, research suggests that changes in the composition of fecal flora and generation of free radicals in synovial fluid also promote symptoms. Modulation of dietary fat intake, manipulation of gastrointestinal flora, and the use of antioxidants may be effective in managing inflammation associated with RA. In this case, a combined approach of nutritional
supplementation to support gastrointestinal function was explored in a patient with RA who had previously reacted to many conventional therapies. The combined approach, which included probiotics and botanicals (for balance of fecal flora), fish oil and antioxidants (to balance inflammatory mediators), and a low-allergy potential rice-based medical food (to manage antigenic response to foods) was found to be successful in attenuation
of RA symptomatology…. Läs hela artikeln →

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation has been used to aid musculoskeletal recovery. Excessive oxidative stress and excitoxicity are implicated in secondary progressive multiple sclerosis. A 52-year-old white female with SPMS had been scooter- and cane-dependent for 4 years. She requested and received a trial of neuromuscular electrical stimulation. Two months after initiating NMES the patient adopted several nutritional interventions to lower oxidative stress and excito-toxicity. During the first 2 months of neuromuscular electrical stimulation, the therapist observed modest gait improvements. Following the addition of nutritional interventions, more rapids gains in strength and endurance, including muscle groups not receiving neuromuscular electrical stimulation were observed by both the therapist and the patient. After 8 months of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (6 months of nutritional intervention) the patient’s function had improved sufficiently that she no longer used a scooter or cane and rode her bicycle routinely 8 miles, including hills….. I loved practicing Tae Kwon Do. The forms are precise, crisp like an elegant dance. But I most especially loved the thrill of sparring. Stepping into the ring, ducking, dodging, kicking, and flying in spinning tornado kicks; I loved the surge of adrenaline that came with the controlled combat of tournaments. I competed nationally, even winning a bronze medal in the trials… Läs hela artikeln →
